Ampyx Power

Ampyx Power is a start-up company in the field of renewable energy. We are developing a novel product called the PowerPlane, which will generate electricity from the wind at much lower cost than wind turbines. Ampyx Power has recently received an investment from Statkraft, Europe's largest renewable energy producer.

Ampyx Power is a start-up company that is developing a much more economic way of generating wind energy, by means of a tethered aircraft. Currently, twelve people work in Ampyx Power on the various technical aspects. We are currently testing a demonstrator that will demonstrate full automation of the system. Ampyx' product is called the PowerPlane. It generates power by means of a tethered aircraft which pulls its tether from a ground-based winch under high tension. The high tension is achieved by flying geometric patterns perpendicular to the wind direction. The aircraft flies at an altitude of about 250-500 m. The rotation of the drum of the winch drives a generator. When there is no cable left on the drum, the aircraft flies down along the cable and the cable is retrieved under very low tension. The difference in tension results in net power generation. The PowerPlane produces cheaper power because the forces are smaller, there is more wind higher up and installation costs are lower.
