Security testing in an industrial context

This proposal is about security in an industrial context. Network enabling technologies are increasing the vulnerability of control systems to security attacks. Our objective is to improve the safety of ABB control systems with extensive IP stack security and robustness testing.

The project involves defining test cases to test the implementation of an ABB proprietary communications protocol. The objective is to investigate whether the protocol implementation is susceptible to typical coding bugs, e.g buffer overflow and format string vulnerabilities. Such vulnerabilities are increasingly a common type of security attack on data integrity. This form of testing enables us to improve device security, robustness, and availability.
